#digitalgovtip #6: Make sure your government website is encrypted.

Make sure your government website is encrypted.

Make sure your government website is encrypted.

#digitalgovtip shares quick advice to inspire, empower and help governments move their digital efforts forward.

Protecting user privacy should be a government priority, and Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is fundamental to online digital security.

As I told Government Technology in its recent coverage on this front:

“At a time when people’s faith in government is low, especially with security issues that are coming up in the news around government and security, when you go to a government website and you see ‘not secure’ in a browser, regardless of whether you’re submitting information or not, that further decreases people’s faith in government to secure their private information.”

Google’s July deadline for web encryption looms, and many state and local government websites still don’t meet the standard. This will become more of an issue for government as websites show as “not secure.”
